Intro
The Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting (EFWA) provides annual scholarships specifically for women studying accounting. Programs are available for students at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, with awards intended to reduce financial barriers, promote professional advancement, and encourage women to pursue accounting careers.
Application period
Applications open each January and the window closes March 30 for all EFWA scholarships.
Associate degree-level — general eligibility
All associate-level awards require that applicants:
- Are women
- Demonstrate financial need
- Are enrolled in a business degree program (preference given to those concentrating in accounting)
- Attend an accredited two-year college
- Are U.S. citizens
Associate awards
- Aspire Scholarship (2-year award): Up to $2,000 per year for a maximum of two years. Applicants must be the primary source of financial support for their family. To renew for the second year, recipients must verify continued progress toward their degree and show satisfactory academic performance (minimum 2.0 GPA).
- American Dream Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $1,000. Intended for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree in accounting. This scholarship is designed primarily to provide financial and mentoring support to individuals from Black, Latinx, and Native communities; however, eligibility is not limited or restricted on the basis of race, color, sex, age, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability, veteran status, socioeconomic background, or sexual orientation.
Bachelor’s degree-level — general eligibility
All bachelor’s-level awards require that applicants:
- Are women
- Demonstrate financial need
- Are pursuing an accounting degree program (including students with a double major that includes accounting)
- Are enrolled at an AACSB-accredited college or university
- Are U.S. citizens, except where noted for the EFWA Global Undergraduate Scholarship
Bachelor’s awards
- Horizons Scholarship (2-year award): Up to $5,000 per year for up to two years. Applicants must be the primary source of support for their family and be approximately within 60 credit hours of completing an accounting bachelor’s degree. Renewal for the second year requires verification of continued progress toward the accounting degree and evidence of satisfactory coursework (minimum 2.0 GPA).
- IMA Undergraduate Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $2,000. Recipients also receive a complimentary one-year IMA student membership (valued at $39), the CMA exam entrance fee ($250), and exam registration fee ($415 per part). The CMA entrance and registration fees must be used within two years and are non-transferable. Applicants must be the primary source of support for their family.
- EFWA Undergraduate Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $1,500.
- Global Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $1,500. Open to non-U.S. citizens.
Master’s degree-level — general eligibility
All master’s-level awards require that applicants:
- Are women
- Demonstrate financial need
- Are pursuing an advanced/business graduate degree with a concentration in accounting
- Are attending an AACSB-accredited college or university
- Are U.S. citizens
Master’s awards
- IMA Graduate Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $1,500. In addition to the cash award, recipients receive a complimentary one-year IMA student membership ($39), the CMA exam entrance fee ($250), and the CMA exam registration fee ($415 per part). The CMA entrance and registration fees expire after two years and are not transferable. Applicants must be the primary source of support for their family.
- EFWA Graduate Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $1,500.
PhD-level — general eligibility
All PhD research degree awards require that applicants:
- Are women
- Demonstrate financial need
- Are pursuing a PhD in business with an accounting concentration
- Are enrolled at an AACSB-accredited college or university
- Are U.S. citizens
PhD award
- Laurel’s Fund Scholarship (1-year, one-time): Up to $3,000.
