Overview Maverick Academic Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated a strong record of academic achievement. Awards range from $1,000 to $8,000 per year and may be renewed for up to three additional years (for a maximum of four years), with the award amount tied to the strength of the student’s academic profile. Eligibility and Selection All first-time freshmen are evaluated for the Maverick Academic Scholarship. The Scholarship Committee conducts a holistic review of each student’s academic history, considering multiple elements such as cumulative GPA, standardized test scores (if submitted), and the rigor of high school coursework. Stronger academic credentials typically lead to higher award amounts. Test-Optional Policy (2026–2027) For the 2026–2027 academic year, UTA and the Maverick Academic Scholarship follow a test-optional policy. Submitting SAT or ACT scores is optional but strongly encouraged. If a student provides test scores and those scores would improve the scholarship outcome, those scores will be factored into the award decision. Recipients receive the largest scholarship amount for which they qualify, based on academic credentials and available funding. Non-Resident Waiver Eligible out-of-state recipients may receive a non-resident tuition waiver as part of this scholarship. When applied, the waiver reduces tuition and fees to the same rate paid by Texas residents for up to four years, provided the student maintains the required academic standing for the duration of the award. Important Note Merit-based scholarship decisions are highly competitive. Meeting the stated criteria ensures an applicant will be considered but does not guarantee an award.
