Introductory summary
The Sarah A. Bonnifield Vietnam Veterans Scholarship Fund was created by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 500 after Sarah Bonnifield directed the bulk of her estate to benefit various veterans’ and other nonprofit organizations. The fund honors Ms. Bonnifield in perpetuity by awarding an annual scholarship to a Vietnam Veteran or to a qualifying dependent/relative of a Vietnam Veteran.
Eligibility
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a Vietnam Veteran or a dependent/relative of a Vietnam Veteran. “Relative” may include spouse, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, nephew, or niece.
- Be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university.
- Submit a clear copy of the Veteran’s DD Form 214.
- Demonstrate financial need.

- Application deadline: March 13, 2026
Application materials / supplemental questions
Applicants should provide the following:
1. Proof of U.S. military service (for example, a copy of DD Form 214 or a military ID).
2. Confirmation that the applicant is either a Vietnam Veteran or a qualifying dependent/relative (see eligibility list above).
3. An essay addressing the “Coming Home” experience of Vietnam Veterans.
4. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are not related to the applicant (submit both letters).
