Louis P. and Betty A. Iacona Nursing Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Rochester Area Community Foundation
Purpose
- To offer financial support to students who live in Monroe County and are preparing for a career in nursing.
Who may apply
- Monroe County residents who are planning to enter or are already enrolled in a nursing program at a two- or four-year college or university.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required.
- Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
- Relevant volunteer or community service experience will be taken into account.
Application window
- Applications are accepted December 1 through February 28.
Award amount and distribution
- One award of $12,000 is available. It is paid in equal annual installments over four consecutive undergraduate years.
- The award may be divided between two recipients.
- Payment is made to the recipient’s school in the Fall as a lump sum and is applied evenly to the Fall and Spring semesters.
- Minimum award: $4,000. (This minimum can be paid as $1,000 per year for up to four years.)
Permitted uses
- Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other education-related expenses.
How to apply
- Begin or continue your submission via the Community Foundation’s online Scholarship Portal.
- This scholarship participates in the Consolidated Scholarship Application; submitting this application will also consider you for other scholarships included in that consolidated process.
Selection process
- Applications are reviewed by a committee made up of Community Foundation staff and community representatives.
- The Foundation encourages selection of recipients from diverse ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds.
Notification and payment requirements
- Award notifications and instructions are emailed in the Spring.
- To trigger the initial Fall payment, upload the required documentation to the Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15: a class schedule and tuition bill confirming enrollment in a two- or four-year nursing program.
- For each subsequent payment, upload the requested documents between July 1 and August 15: an unofficial transcript, a class schedule, and a tuition bill showing continued enrollment in a nursing program and confirmation of at least a 2.5 GPA.
- Scholarships not claimed by February 15 of the assigned year will be forfeited.
Renewal rules (effective beginning 2021)
- The scholarship may be renewed up to three times, allowing for a maximum of four consecutive annual awards. Renewal eligibility depends on the recipient’s status when first awarded:
- High school seniors: eligible for renewal for up to four consecutive awards (total of four years).
- College freshmen: eligible for renewal for up to three additional years (total of three years).
- College sophomores: eligible for renewal for up to two additional years (total of two years).
- College juniors: one-time award; not renewable.
