Overview Our merit-driven scholarships are offered twice yearly to assist and encourage women who are pursuing studies in international trade. Eligible topics include, but are not limited to, trade policy and negotiations, global business and supply chains, economic development, and related areas. Eligibility - Applicants must self-identify as female and be currently enrolled (full- or part-time) at an accredited U.S. college or university. - Eligible students are undergraduate Juniors or Seniors, or graduate students. Award and Selection - Each scholarship winner receives $3,000. Awards are determined by a judged evaluation of the submitted essay according to WIIT Trust criteria. - Decisions are made without regard to race, religion, age, national origin, or sexual orientation. Payment Instructions for Winners - Scholarship funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s academic institution. Winners must provide: - Name of the academic institution. - Point of contact at the institution for scholarship payment (including phone and email). - Address and any payment remittance details required by the school (including phone and email). - Student ID number to identify the payment. - Any additional information the institution requires for its financial processing. Additional Benefits for Winners - One year of one-on-one mentorship from a WIIT member. - One year of WIIT membership. - The chance to contribute to a WIIT program tied to the winning essay topic, working with experienced professionals on planning and possibly participating as a speaker. Application requirements Every submission must include: - The essay (see format and content rules below). - A completed information form. - A university transcript verifying current enrollment. Essay content expectations Strong submissions should: - Address a topic clearly connected to international trade. - State a thesis that defines the essay’s trade argument or focus. - Offer critical analysis that considers both sides of the issue and robustly defends the main thesis. - Meet standard conventions of grammar and formatting and include endnotes or a bibliography. Formatting and submission rules - Length: Minimum 5 pages and maximum 10 pages, numbered. Page limit applies to the body only; endnotes or bibliography are excluded from the page count. - Formatting: Typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman. - File format: Submit as a Word document. - Anonymity: Remove all personal identifiers (applicant name, university name, etc.) before submitting. - Submit to: info@wiittrust.org - Use of AI: The use of AI tools to create or assist in producing essay content is prohibited (including, but not limited to, Copilot, ChatGPT, Google Gemini). Deadlines and notifications - Applications are accepted twice a year with deadlines on April 1 and November 1. - Winners will be notified by May 15 and December 15, respectively. Topics Applicants may choose any topic that can be directly linked to international trade. Topics may be broad or narrowly focused. Example topic areas include: - Trade & Development: How trade policy can advance sustainable development goals or environmental priorities. - Trade & Empowerment: How trade policy can promote gender diversity and deliver tangible benefits for women’s economic empowerment. - Trade & Investment Agreements: Analyze a current agreement’s effects on a particular industry and/or workforce. - U.S. Trade Policy: Examine a current element of U.S. trade policy and its potential positive and/or negative effects on the U.S. economy. - Foreign Trade/Economic Policy: Evaluate a foreign country’s trade or economic policy and its impact on U.S. competitiveness.
