Texas Medical Excellence Scholarship

Introduction
The Texas Medical Excellence Scholarship was established by Fort Worth plastic surgeon Dr. Emily J. Kirby to provide financial support and encouragement to students in Texas who are pursuing studies in medical-related fields. One $2,500 award is available to a qualifying Texas medical student.
Purpose and permitted uses
The scholarship is intended to offset tuition and other education-related costs. Examples of allowable uses include, but are not limited to: textbooks, classroom and office supplies (paper, pens, notebooks, etc.), required technology, campus meal plans, housing, and transportation expenses.
Disbursement and tax responsibility
The scholarship will be issued directly to the recipient as a cash prize. The recipient is responsible for any tax reporting and liabilities associated with receiving the award; consulting a tax professional is recommended to ensure proper filing.
Who is eligible
To qualify for the Texas Medical Excellence Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a current resident of Texas.
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate or postgraduate student pursuing a medicine-related degree or career path at an accredited institution (on-campus or online).
- Complete the application form and submit original essay responses (essays will be screened for AI-generated content).
- Upload a completed application packet, a professional headshot, and one letter of reference that includes valid contact information.
- Agree to public disclosure of their name and allow their photograph to be used for scholarship publicity if selected.

Doctoral: MD, DO, DPM, DMD, OD, PsyD, PharmD, DCM, DS, DPT, DSN, DNP
Nursing: RN, NP, CNM, CRNA
Master’s-level: MPH, MM, MMS, MN, MNA, MPharm, MPAS, MSN, MSM
Physician assistant: PA, PA-C
2026 timeline
- Monday, March 9: Application period opens
- Monday, March 9 – Friday, June 5: Applications accepted
- Monday, June 8 – Monday, June 29: Scholarship Committee reviews submissions and selects the winner
- Monday, July 6: Winner announced and notified
