Workplace Rights Scholarships

Introductory Statement
We are proud to introduce the Freedman Law Workplace Rights Scholarship, created to support students committed to advancing workers’ rights and civil liberties. This award is intended to help learners — whether they are current or prospective law students or pursuing other career paths — who are dedicated to educating others about employment law and creating meaningful change for workers nationwide.
Award Amount and Use
One recipient will be granted $1,000. The funds may be applied to tuition, textbooks, school supplies, room and board, or other educational expenses.
Eligibility
To qualify for consideration, applicants must meet all of the following:
- Demonstrate a strong interest in civil rights and/or employment law topics — examples include efforts to combat workplace discrimination and harassment, wage theft, minimum wage and overtime compliance, whistleblower protections, non-compete matters, and collective bargaining/union issues.
- Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher from the most recently attended institution.
- Be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, an accredited college or university for the spring 2026 semester.
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status.
Application Materials
Please submit the items below as part of your application:
- Proof of enrollment at an accredited college or university.
- An official or unofficial transcript showing a GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Contact information (name, email, phone, mailing address).
- A response to the essay prompt in one of the following formats:
- A written statement of 250–500 words, or
- A video essay lasting 2–3 minutes.
Essay Prompt
How will you use your education to advance workers’ rights and/or civil rights within workplaces?
Selection Criteria
Applications will be judged on the following factors:
- The clarity, depth, and overall quality of the essay or video in addressing the prompt.
- Demonstrated commitment to employment law and civil-rights-related issues (for example, preventing workplace discrimination, advocating for fair pay, protecting whistleblowers, or supporting collective bargaining).
- Fulfillment of all eligibility requirements and submission of the requested documentation.
